White Skin Equals Beautiful
by Aisyah Nurlillah (10822051)_2MA15.
"try if your skin is white, you must be really beautiful. "
"If your skin wasn't black. There must have been many who approached. "
"Try taking care of your skin. Surely your skin will be white. "
Do you often hear phrases in public places or around you? Maybe some people see it as a normal thing, no need to be baper. But frankly, these statements are actually unusual, not at all ordinary.
Beauty standards have become a reference for people to judge the appearance of others. In Indonesian society, there is often a view that white skin is considered the standard of beauty that women aspire to. Beauty is not only limited to skin color, but also includes many other aspects such as one's personality, behavior, and character. However, in reality, the beauty standards circulating in society have made some women lose their confidence.

First of all, Beauty is a concept that involves the subjective assessment of a person's physical appearance, characteristics, or qualities that are considered attractive or beautiful. The concept of beauty may vary across different cultures and societies.Furthermore, nowadays everyone has different views and preferences on what they consider beautiful. However, in Indonesia having fair skin is often considered the standard of beauty. This is due to the influence of media and advertisements that often promote the image that white skin is a symbol of beauty, success, and social status.
For example, nowadays k-pop idols, influencers, and public figures are the benchmark for us to be beautiful like them.
Secondly, I think true beauty is not only located and measured based on skin color, but based on what is inside a person such as kindness, intelligence, and self-confidence. With this standard of beauty, people tend to compare themselves with others. It makes it easier for us to find flaws in ourselves. It also has an impact on a person's mental health, there have been many female victims whose mental health is disturbed because they think too much about their shortcomings.
According to Ajeng Patria Meilisa, M.Si, an academic of Communication Science and former finalist of Puteri Indonesia in 2008. "Actually, the standard of beauty is the comfort of each owner." Which means as long as women feel comfortable with what their bodies have, then they already have inner beauty and don't need to try to meet the beauty standards in society. Talking about beauty is endless, everyone has many categories in assessing beauty itself. In fact, many women are competing to take many categories of "beautiful" and even want to get all categories of "beautiful".
In short, although society may think that having fair skin is very important, I believe that we should all strive to celebrate and appreciate beauty in all its shapes and colors. Because at the end of the day, true beauty comes from within.
